The Ontology of Gender
A HI debate
between philosophers
Alex Byrne
MIT
Louise Antony
UMass-Amherst
- This debate will feature two prominent philosophers debating rigorously and respectfully about one of the central topics of our time: gender.
- Prof. Alex Byrne (Philosophy, MIT) has defended the view that gender has an inextricably biological basis.
- By contrast, Prof. Louise Antony (Philosophy, UMass Amherst) has argued that the picture is more complex: gender, properly understood, can and often is divorced from biological sex.
- Following scholarly conversations in feminist philosophy, the debate will focus on the ontology of ‘woman.’ Each speaker will get a chance to present their best arguments and respond to each other; finally they will take questions from the audience.
