Reflections on Moral Deliberation, Choice, and Commitment
All of us make choices, all the time: whether they be about planning a career, dealing with a difficult family member, how to best treat a friend, or countless other things. But how do we make good choices in the different aspects of our lives? Moreover, some choices have very big ramifications. When does it make sense to commit to some major project or belief? For questions such as these, much of Western philosophy has stressed the role of the virtue of practical wisdom or prudence. On such accounts, a goal—perhaps the goal—of moral philosophy is to acquire wisdom in practical matters. This reading group will explore this tradition of thinking, contemporary reflections on choice and commitments, and their relevance to the lives of students.
All undergraduates and graduate students welcome. No advanced preparation required. Dinner provided.
